Tom Lorish's Morning Swim -
It was a 51-50 day at Avila… Heavy marine layer, glassy calm water, 50° air temperature and 51° water. There were hundreds of the little sailor jellies washed up on the beach and hundreds more out in the water - catching the currents and wind to places beyond. Excellent morning vitamin.

Tom Beats The Crowds -
A beautiful spring summer day at Avila. I arrived at 900 a.m. and it was already 62°. Clear blue skies, scattered clouds, and glassy calm water. There was a slow moving 2 foot wave rolling in that crumbled onto the shore. The water temperature was 55, 56°. Which was surprising because it was about 51 on Wednesday. But, we've been seeing swings like that for the last couple years. It was a wonderful morning swim.
The Lifeguard Lap paddle board race is tomorrow in Avila Beach. 4 and 8 mile courses.

Tom Lorish's Wednesday Swim -
The conditions were pretty much the same as Monday. Except for the water temperature which was down a couple degrees to 51. Beautiful morning Swim.
Tom Lorish's Swim Report -
Beautiful morning at Avila. I arrived at 91 5 AM to blue skies and a hazy horizon. The swell had picked back up after a few days of flat and calm. There were 3 to 4 foot waves rolling through and the bulldozer was knocking down the berm and building up the Sand around the lifeguard towers. The water temperature was about 53° and the swimming was good.
Beautiful and Cold -
Coolbreeze, blue sky, and a haze far off in the distance. I arrived at Avila at 910 AM. There was a cool breeze blowing from east to west that created dimpled water. The swell had completely dropped off leaving only 6 to 12 inch waves. The the water felt about 50° to me… Which means it was probably 51. I had a nice swim around the CPP.
The Point to Pier T -
Clear skies, glassy water, and a super low tide. That was Avila at 830 AM. The air temperature was 48° and the water temperature was 52°. It was a good morning to swim around Avila rock. There was a serious bed of kelp out there with no clear channel through, so I had to do about 15 yards of kelp crawling. It was interesting out at the Rock - with the super low tide there was actually a pretty good wave of crashing over it. Beautiful morning swim.
Avila Rock -
I'll be back Thursday, Saturday and Sunday

Tom Gets Wet -
Wet and wild at Avila this morning. I arrived at 930 AM to wet streets and a wild ocean. The water temperature was about 53°. The swell had dropped off from Friday, but it was still pushing 3 foot plus waves and the storm had created bumps and currents that were pushing all different directions. It was a good morning vitamin.
Tom Lorish Draws Some Big Action -
Big swell, big high tide: rock 'n' roll swimming at its best. The high tide and the big swell combined for 6 - 8 foot waves that were pouring over the berm and water running all the way to the wall on the east side. The waves were rolling in fast with a short period between – it was a challenge getting out. But once out, the swimming was excellent.

Tom Lorish's Good Morning Swim -
Heavy marine layer, high tide, and excellent swimming conditions. The water was glassy and calm with a 4 foot wave rolling in. The water felt 52 to me, which means it was probably 53° accounting for the cool air and heavy marine layer. Lovely morning swimming.

Tom Lorish's Morning Vitamin. -
Beautiful spring morning at Avila when I arrived at 900 AM. Spring is springing and the crowds were flocking into Avila even on a Monday morning. They combine temperature was 111. The swell had picked up and was bringing in 3 to 4 foot waves. The water felt warmer than yesterday, but still right around 50°. It was a good morning vitamin.
Tom Lorish Get's Cold Toes -

Clear blue skies, low tide, and it felt like early spring. The combine number was 104. There was a 2 foot plus wave rolling in and the swimming was good.

Tom Sneaks In Before The Storm -
Avila Beach was stronger than I was this morning.
I arrived looking for a swim that would let me vent a lot of work and technology stress from yesterday. i.e.; not too hard of an entry. I found storm surf and conditions that would require a start with a strong and sustained push out through the waves. I waded in on the east and then the west sides of the pier. I didn't channel my tension into energy and then use that to push me through the surf. So no swim.
The conditions this morning were not extortionary; 3 foot waves with the largest ones between 4 and 5 feet. The wind was onshore and the tide was coming in so the waves were well consolidated with a 10 to 15 second period so once you started there would be no resting until you got outside. The water felt like the low 50's. The strangest thing was that every so often a wave would come in going left to right, at an angle across the rest of the waves. I wonder if the surf was piling water up against the steep beach and Fossil Point until it broke out and made a wave that ran down the beach towards the pier....?
Thursday's swim is probably rained out so my next swim will depend on how much we get from tomorrow's storm.

Monday Morning With Tom's Toes -
It was a partly clear day at Avila this morning. High thin clouds covered a lot of the blue skies. The tide was high and there was a 3 foot wave breaking right on the shore. The combined number was 97. it was a nice Monday morning Swim.
I arrived at Avila at 930 AM. Super low tide and a Strong cool breeze blowing from the southwest. Blue skies and scattered clouds. The number was 103. There water was choppy but no whitecaps while I was swimming. It was a good swim but chilly.
The green brown goop that was on Old Port Beach yesterday tested as safe for levels of bacteria. I've been told that it may be from kelp that had gotten churned up by wave action.
